Coming Soon

A mixture of kit that I’ve recently received and not yet fully tested yet and some tried and tested favourites that I will be writing up soon.   I’ve included links so you can check the latest prices on Amazon.

This arrived yesterday.  I'm away from home several times a month and currently lug a four-gang mains extension socket around with me.  I decided to treat myself to this - a single plug that can run a laptop and simultaneously charge my phone and watch. It’s a very good quality product - reassuringly heavy. The plug pins fold flat for ease of packing. It’s got an LED readout on how much power each device is using and its temperature. It is way more powerful than the charger that comes with an iPhone or iPad.

So far, very impressed, I will report back when I've tested it for a few weeks more.

This arrived on Monday—four days ago. My old Black Diamond torch got dropped and stopped working, so I replaced it with this one. It’s rechargeable, waterproof, and very simple. I didn’t want or need a smartphone app to talk to my head torch, and I don’t like complicated sequences of buttons to remember. This one is of high quality but not overly complicated.  It has analogue dials for brightness and focus; you can use them with gloves on. There is just one  button for power.  If you hold it down for several seconds, it activates a travel lock to stop it coming on in your bag.

It’s bright; I’ve driven cars with worse headlamps!

I've used it twice a day for dog walking in pitch darkness since Monday, so far I am extremely pleased with it. I'll go through a few battery cycles and report back with a full review in a few weeks’ time.

Rode USB Microphone

Rode USB Mic on spring loaded desk arm.

I work from home and take part in a lot of video calls.  I've tried several different microphones out, and this one is by far the best solution for my setup.  It really is studio quality. I've got it mounted on a spring-loaded arm so I can position it in front of my face or push it aside when not in use.  The difference in sound quality is remarkable.  I also use it for VoiceOver work.  I've had this in use for several months. I'll do a proper review of it when I've caught up with myself.

I've had this since July 2025 and properly used it on two occasions, both times it has been reliable and produced far superior sound to what we could have achieved using iPhones.  If you're using your phone as the camera, that means the phone's mic is almost certainly not ideally positioned to capture your voice effectively so you really need one of these.  I don't use it as a transmitter, I just press record and then copy the saved audio file into Final Cut Pro and stitch it together.  Very happy with it so far but I want to test it some more and learn more about it.

Msr Dragonfly Stove 2020 Camping Stove

My bombproof and highly trusted petrol powered MSR stove. I have used this hundreds of times heating up meals and making cups of tea, I still think it's a brilliant bit of kit.  I particularly like the fact that I can just top up with fuel whenever I want at incredibly low cost relative to gas canisters.  I have had mine since 2020 so I can recommend it with confidence, I'll do a more detailed review soon.

Anker Power Bank, 20,000mAh

Arrived just today - I love Anker kit, it's always very good indeed.  I wanted a modern, reliable power brick mainly for my iPhone and Ultra 3 Watch.  I go away kayaking and wild camping  for several days at a time  and I can go through a couple of power bricks in that time.  My old ones are getting past their best and I don't trust them with my valuable electronics so I thought I'd get this premium model.  2 x Usb C output 1 x Usb A, comes with an integral USB C lead so you don't even need a separate cable.  I appreciate the battery % display instead of vague LEDs.  I'll be putting it through its paces and getting some better photos soon.
